The melting heart

When the clouds are sad
A rough home in the oceans great,
of clouds; where they all time wait
bear the rough yoked hurts
of ocean waves

For a long-long time
until it becomes too onerous
and they can’t bear their sorrows
they rise and walk to the earth
their eyes so dark and hot as hearth

Then on their face earth blows cool air
so that they be with themselves fair
Then they whimpering pour down their hearts
overwhelmed on the earth, for

They know she has a woman’s heart
and will bear their tears load
share their grief and dry their face
and will wait for them on the same road

Gadgets and 3G

Coming from the seventies of the 20th Century leaves me a little short of knowledge for the modern gadgets and machines of hi-tech configuration.  Till date simple things like a normal click camera, a bike with simple four gears and a car with simple five gears which runs on fuel are all that I know of as vehicles on two or four wheels.  My father who was too timid to ride a bike or even learn to drive a car, always believed in hiring a cab and living simple, with a book or newspaper to read while the driver performed his task of burning the tyres.  I also developed the same tendency but was a step ahead by driving a vehicle of my own.  And of course I operate my own PC, have also experienced some elementary functions like searching songs of my choice, creating my own play lists and albums on different sites or finding some long lost friends on facebook which I find is more like an electronic trade fair where everything and everybody has a destination and all you need is the trick to find and get associated with them.  But all this is something similar to visiting various places, locating people in their new domains or maintaining your own counter of some favourite music records etc.  Like my father, my greatest emphasis lay on reading literature and books, enhancing and grooming myself as a good human and making my experiences knowledgeable to myself.

With the passage of time, the approach of not only parents but also children has changed. Now my kids log on to so many sites and instantly start playing games, where each game has its own commands, cheat codes, operational keys and rules.  My daughter at nine is sharper than I am where computer games are concerned.  But I keep trying to inculcate in her the hobby to read story books and moral teaching which now I with help of my teenager son am finding easier since almost everything is available on net.  I could call myself lucky in the respect that I am a parent in the era where imparting better education and quality time is more versatile and easily available as compared to the parents of few decades ago.  But another fact in alliance with this is that the impact of the net culture is too obvious and unfathomable that the roots are hard to find.

My nephew who is presently living with us is a gadget freak  and all I have to say “G” of gadgets and he starts with the complete encyclopaedia.   Coming from a “love for literature” background I keep insisting him to read and write in plenty his own ideas and opinions on various subjects but he loves to stay comfortable with his mother tongue which is Hindi and a compulsion of English week leaves him with prolonged silences and self imposed seclusion with a pretext of sincere studies.

Recently I thought of buying a new mobile and a car which have been on my list since long but I have kept deferring it due to one reason or the other.  My mobile functions are crashing down slowly and now I can only make or receive calls, and read messages but not forward any.   At this point I simply asked my nephew the other day about what this 3G and the much ado about it was?  His first excited query was if I was planning to buy one. I confirmed saying that a new mobile phone and a car were my next priority.  The pleasure on his face was prominently visible and I wondered how he would have reacted if I was buying the same for him.  I browed him once again, resting myself more deeply into my chair.  He nearly jumped out of his in the excitement with remarks, ‘do you want a 3G network with your phone or wish to keep it simple like the present one.’

“What’s the difference,” I asked.  I thought I had heard of 3G mobiles, so what was this   3G network?

“Oh! You need to have a 3G phone for  3G network.”

“OK. But does it work differently from the kind of one I have right now?”

Of course.  Unlike your present mobile, 3G phone can be operated with simple and 3G networks.  With the combined feature of the two, you can enjoy high speed internet, wi-fi, video calling, and so many features and vast applications you never could have dreamt about.”

“Really?”  I don’t know why I was not feeling as enthusiastic about it.

“Yeah.  They are in fact the smart phones of today, the 3rd Generation.”

“You mean they are the best?”

“No, the 4G is even better.”

“Which is best then?”

I had meant ‘best for me’ but I was totally misunderstood and he carried on, “well, if you want the best then I suppose you will have to wait for some more time.  The SixthSense device has been developed which is really something.  The prototype was made with readily available technology 2 years ago but device with this amount of power is not yet in our hands. The smart phones with applications though  effectively give you the same ability, but to piece the technology together,  the way SixthSense has is fabulous.  And it has a whole new world of possibilities, beyond your imaginations.”

I looked blankly at him for a few seconds.  I wondered where he usually gathered all this much.  He is not allowed access to net these days because of his high standards of education which he is finding hard to cope.  His school and extra classes keep him too occupied most of the time.

Fearing I might look like an idiot in front of him, I changed the conversation saying, “ Leave mobile, I think I will go for a car first.”

“Fine, but with so many options available in the market just like the mobiles, don’t make a wrong choice.”

Now a car was a car was a car. Isn’t it?  I knew that there were different cars in the market, small and big which ran on diesel or petrol.  Yes lately one on battery had also come to be heard of.  But may be there was something that would be new and more informative for my knowledge so despite my inhibition I incited him to go on.

“Definitely I will do my study.  After all cars have been on roads since ages, so what’s much new about them besides their daily changing shapes and designs.”
“Oh! But there are not just the two small or big cars any more if you think,” had he read my mind or was I being too suspicious.

“If not small and big cars, what do we have then?,” I carelessly threw my remark back to get more out of him.

“Look , you have to see your requirement of space for family, parking, your frequency of use, the kinds of roads you are gong to drive it on, what fuel you might prefer for the sake of your convenience etc. These days from SUV, CUV, MPV, Sedan, hatch backs, electric cars, muscle cars,  sports cars to Hybrid cars, there are uncountable categories available in the market.  You name it and they have it for you.”

I didn’t know that cars had muscles and that they could be run with electricity like trains.  Have I missed the electric barbs high on the roads? This task of buying car with my nephew’s guidance somehow was looking like even tougher than buying a mobile phone.  I knew there were different automobiles but so many range baffled my mind beyond repair I suppose.   Pretending to look sensible and knowledgeable I nodded wisely.

“I like the idea of Hybrid car.”  I wanted to veil my ignorance on the topic and hence made a choice by picking the name he had spoken last, the only one that had come to rest in my memory from the long list of suggestions he had just articulated.

“Are you sure?,” his eyes were  as big as pears and mouth wide open that a whole of a melon could be shoved into.

“I think I am.  After all one doesn’t buy a car every day.”  That was smart remark I left the conversation at.  But soon after I found myself recalling all the information provided and searching the same on internet, the whole sea of electronic knowledge.  What I found was that Hybrid car was double the amount my budget could provide, while the mobile though useful would be better left for the 3rd generation to operate.  I was happier and better off with my current facility, provided a new set to operate on the old system.  To my amazement, all the information was so very technical that only a person with intelligence and sharp mind could grasp, surprisingly which had come to me from a young boy, who is considered as below average in IQ and struggling hard to keep decent grades.

The mind no doubt stores what it finds interesting and loves to manifest upon.
